Prof. Eugene Chan is currently a Clinical Associate Professor at the Department of Paediatrics of CUHK. He works in the Paediatric Nephrology Centre of Hong Kong Children’s Hospital, which is the designated, territory-wide referral centre in Hong Kong.Prof. Chan dedicates his research in the field of paediatric glomerular disease, in particular childhood nephrotic syndrome and lupus nephritis. His team focuses to unravel the underlying disease pathogenesis and advance patient care in these conditions. He is also interested in research related to chronic kidney disease, peritoneal dialysis and onco-nephrology. Over the past few years, he has established an international collaborative research network on novel therapy in nephrotic syndrome, involving over 30 paediatric nephrology centres in Asia, Europe, North America and Oceania. His team has identified the impact of rituximab dosing regimen and maintenance immunosuppression on disease remission in complicated steroid-dependent nephrotic syndrome (Kidney Int 2020, J Am Soc Nephrol 2022). The team has also found that anti-CD20 could serve as a rescue therapy in steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome that is not responsive to calcineurin inhibitors (Kidney Int 2024). His works have been published in top peer-reviewed nephrology journals including Kidney International and the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. Findings of studies have led to changes in treatment recommendations in international guidelines published by the International Pediatric Nephrology Association (IPNA) and KDIGO.He serves as a Co-Chair (Webinar) in the Professional Education Committee of the International Pediatric Nephrology Association and has contributed significantly to medical education in advancing global kidney care for children. He also works as an Associate Editor in Kidney International and a Section Editor in Pediatric Nephrology. Locally, he is a Council Member of the HK Paediatric Nephrology Society.
